What is a blogazine?
Think of a blogazine as an online magazine with blog qualities–the biggest one being anyone can start one. Most pages look different within a blogazine where as blogs are traditionally more structured. Only the post changes within a blog and the rest of the content stays the same (headers, navigation menus, sidebars, widgets, footers, etc). But with a blogazine each post looks different. However a good blogazine will provide a consistent visual feel throughout the whole blogazine just like a magazine. Starting to catch on?
What’s the difference between a blog and a blogazine?
This is an example of a blog. The content (post) changes but the layout stays the same on each page.
And here is an example of a blogazine. Each article has a unique content, layout, and design.
Blogs are popular because they are easy to set up. They are easy to customize and design with Themes. The focus of a blog is content which can be published a number of ways–the blog admin, via e-mail, cell phone, or republished automatically with RSS.
Blogazines are more difficult to produce. They take more time because the author must design a fresh design layout for each page in addition to writing content. Some blogazines cheat a little and use a few layouts and simply change the colors and media placement. It slides because magazines do that too. But I prefer blogazines that are more visually unique and will profile more of those on Blogazines.org.
As blogazines become more popular and easier to produce, their popularity will rise and they will become awesome. Think of American Idol the first year versus the type of people competing on Season 4. I think that gets the message across but truthfully I didn’t watch American Idol past season 1. But I did hear the singers got better and it became more competitive.
In the near future companies will make it easier to create blogazines. Online visual editors integrated with current blogging management systems is one route. Independent startups is another. Blogazines.org will keep you up to date on the newest advancements in blogazine technology.

How do I make a blogazine?
If you represent an existing publication that wants to switch to a blogazine style website check out Greener Mags – Your Interactive Magazines.
If you don’t know much about programming, try using a Wordpress management system and create a simple layout with top navigation and no sidebars. For each post simply insert the blogazine page that you created in Photoshop. The only problem with this is that the text within the image is not searchable by Google and Bing because they can’t read a picture of text. As an easy alternative, you could repost the text underneath the image so search engines can find you.
In the near future, content management systems and visual editing software will start integrating so it will be easier for designers with little programing skills to build blogazines.
